From eccentric characters to heinous court theaters, the reversal referee series is known for its heinous antics and poignant moments. Even after completing the iconic Phoenix Wright trilogy, the series found a way to move on. Since then, we have new lawyers like Apollo Justice, derivatives starring Miles Edgeworth, and an intersection with Professor Layton. However, one of the most creative efforts to restart the formula was found in the great reversal referee series, which took players to a different time and place: the Victorian era in England. Sadly, these two great reversal referees have not headed west until now. Capcom's The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles includes two games, dual audio in Japanese and English, eight "Shards of Life" adventures, and a new self-advancing story mode. I cannot recommend a better way to experience one of the most hyped stories in the history of reversal refereeing. Sometimes, the change of scenery makes everything different.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles brings players back to the Meiji era in Japan and the Victorian era in England in the early 20th century, showing the culture and standards of the two countries. Of course, Chronicles is very concerned about the legal system and the operation of the courts. At this moment in history, Britain is becoming more and more modern, and the Japanese have learned a lot from its methods. However, as we all know, no system is perfect, and every case exposes some flaws and corruption. This time, you will play Ryunosuke Naruhodo, the ancestor of Phoenix Wright, who just discovered his passion for law. Ryunosuke went to England to learn more, but he did anything that could go wrong like a reversal referee, and forced him into court before he was ready. As lucky as Phoenix Wright, he also uses similar gestures. His court assistant Susato Mikotoba also conveyed some important resonance from Maya Fey, because of her firm support for Ryunosuke and her enthusiasm for Herlock Sholmes.
I like the familiar nuances of these characters, but they also feel like people with a personal journey. For example, Susasto is more conservative and considerate than Maya, and must stand up for herself in an era when women are often overlooked. It's fun to find similarities and connections, but you don't have to play previous games to follow the story of the great reversal referee. It's all about brand new stories and characters, so this collection is a good starting point. As an independent story, this is one of the weirdest plots in the world of reversal refereeing. I mean, you joined the great detective "Herlock Sholmes", he is just a stupid man who knows almost nothing about what happened. Even if there are more comedic tendencies, I also like to describe how to not ignore the chaos and flaws of the judicial system, and to reveal side agreements and government intervention. However, sometimes the game struggles with black humor, leading to embarrassing moments, such as a character who vomits blood and a character who threatens his existence by waving a gun near his head.
In addition to those few cases, the unpredictable and interesting mystery of the characters involved me; I especially like this overactive person who loves literature and speaks in haiku. Herlock Sholmes made me shake my head a little, but his bushy nature also has some charms. My favorite new character is Iris, a child prodigy, the true mastermind behind the famous Sholmes story. Iris is very insightful and smart, but she also has a lovely innocence to remind you that she is just a girl. I immediately wanted to protect her from the darkest truth in life.

I am very happy that Capcom has combined these two games into one because the stories are closely connected. You will notice a few dangling clues at the end of the first game. I really like the interesting way in which the characters and events returned in the second game enter the case. Part of the magic is that you never know when, if, or how someone from a past case returned to the investigation. The writing is clever and creative, but the way of expression in "The Reversal Referee" is really eye-catching, because you find it interesting in this joke, and you will soon realize why the same characters keep appearing. There is a reason. In court and investigating the crime scene to obtain evidence.
It also involves a lot of dialogue to gather more information. Sometimes, the slow pace will come slowly, because cases, especially later cases, often require investigations and conversations with witnesses in multiple locations. At the same time, the trial contains multiple testimonies and usually requires two to three intermissions. Each case requires a lot of attention and patience, but once things start to fall apart, they can be very helpful, especially when you connect what really happened. My favorite moment is when I realize that I have evidence that can completely overthrow witnesses and expose their lies. Great Lawyer Ace introduced some new strategies for further investigations and more exciting court dramas. Herlock Sholmes often draws wrong conclusions in his "Logic and Reasoning Spectacles", so you must correct your initial inferences about what happened.
This requires investigating things more carefully, such as paying attention to the character's line of sight to find clues or looking at objects from different angles to discover new information. I like the idea behind this look and see new reveals appear, but it was too easy in the first game, so I never felt too fulfilling to solve them. The sum test is another new feature in which the jurors are face to face. Expose their wrong ideas and persuade them to stand by your side. I like to interact with the jury and find ways to get them to support the idea of my argument, but this is another component that seems to be better in theory.
The inconsistencies it detects are random, and I rarely feel that they are very different from what actually happened in the discovery case. These moments do not look like an interesting battle of wits, but delay the case without surprising enough revelation. Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a solid bag that retains the charm and entertainment of previous entries. This is not the best in the series, but there are many things to entertain you as you deal with case after case. The new environment and characters make things feel fresh, but playing another reversal referee game is also a bit like going home.
