Phil Cassidy will no longer sport the symbol on his t-shirt.
Rockstar seems to have removed the reference to the federal flag in the next remaster of the CTA trilogy.
As Kotaku pointed out, the latest trailer for the trilogy shows that the drunken, stupid A-grade weapons merchant Phil Cassidy is no longer wearing a South Army flag T-shirt. .. Instead, it was changed to his skull and a yellow banner. This is a true blink, and you can miss it in a moment just by watching the trailer casually, but you can see it in about 34 seconds.
Rockstar has not yet publicly addressed the changes and has not responded to requests for comment. It's unclear if the flag reference has been completely removed from the trilogy or if it's a visual adaptation just for the trailer.
This isn't the first time Rockstar has removed from the game a flag that has long served as a symbol of southern slavery. In GTA 5, the flag was removed from one of the RV parks, but the symbol remained in another part of the game. More recently, at the end of 2020, Twitch introduced guidelines banning the display of the federal flag for "historical and symbolic links between slavery and white supremacist groups."
